High Dive. No Net, No Problem

What’s the scariest way to spend 120 seconds? Not bungee-jumping, spider-purging or opening your Telus bill. For some the scariest two minutes is their first crack at Table Topics.

Table Topics is of course the one unstructured part of a Toastmasters meeting. That’s where you have to stand before the group and speak on a topic you’ve just been given: no prep required or allowed: just chutzpah. Often visitors to TM meetings will Take the Fifth at this point in their first meeting, choosing instead to quietly watch from the safety of their chair. But on Wednesday all three newcomers, when offered the Table Topics challenge, said, “Hell, yeah!” Okay, maybe it was more like: “Um…okay.” But Katherine, Alison and Tai, they did it.

They cooked, in words, elaborate fantasy meals that had the group salivating. They shared their philosophy of food and health and the social dimension of mealtime. (Debra, Table Topics Master, gave everyone a food question; possibly she had missed lunch.) They brought to the task that slightly nervous-edgy energy that often coaxes the best out of us all.

We hope all three will join VanCore. But even if they don’t, they learned — and we were all reminded of — a great lesson. It’s always better to go for it than not.

Proceed boldly. No regrets.

Let Fly the Fireworks

Toastmasters like to speak from the heart, and few subjects raise as many heartfelt feelings as home and country.  So on American Independence Day, so close on the heels of Canada Day, veteran Susan Chew chose “patriotism” as her Table Topics theme, and everybody let fly with their verbal fireworks.

It was a great summer turnout, with new members and a bright guest — Garrett— and long-missed old stalwarts (that’s you, Mr. Williams) contributing memorably. Cory, who is fast becoming one of those “permanent guest hosts,” like Leno before Carson retired, chaired masterfully again. Looks like it could be a career year for VanCore. New President Connie Hubbs is putting her stamp on the club. She’s working her way through her Competent Leadership Manual, and she reminded members that they too ought to be thinking about the higher reaches beyond the introductory Manual. The air’s thinner up there, but cleaner.

An Exhibition, Not a Competition (Please: no wagering)

Folks, no one ever won the Tour de France without a handful of unsung teammates quietly breaking the way. Similarly, in Toastmasters, there are times when a couple of stars are pushing for a big goal, and the team folds in around them and makes it happen.

This week VanCore members left a couple of speaking spots open for Jonathan and Connie – call them our Lance and Ryder (the cycling metaphor ends here, we promise) — as the two veterans raced to finish Advanced Manuals. Their aim is to nab their AD Silver and AC Bronze citations by month’s end. That’s great for Jonathan and Connie, and it’s great for VanCore, because it’ll earn the club two points to the enviable position of  “Select Distinguished Club.”

But VanCore’s about much more than the highballers. This week, for example, Angela, new this year, chaired her first-ever meeting. And did it well. She was cool, gracious, and covered the agenda like a Trojan.

The club also welcomed its newest member, Renee, about whom everyone has a great feeling. Susan’s Father’s Day-themed Table Topics drew touching impromptus from Loa, Cory, Vanessa, Renee, Cal and Corrine — a guest who dived in.

New blood, old blood: that’s the way it works. Everyone’s getting better in their way, at their speed. There are no prima donnas in VanCore.

Even though that WAS the word of the day.

Old Blood, New Blood

Connie Hubbs, as she ran the meeting, had a different-than-usual air about her. It was the easy authority of one who runs the whole kit-and-kaboodle.

And why not? Connie was last week elected club president. She kicked off her term with not one but two big roles. She chaired AND she gave the day’s only prepared speech, from the advanced communicator’s manual. Silence blanketed the room as she told a personal story of manning the crisis line and talking a potential suicide victim into choosing to live. (It was part of a fundraising speech she’s preparing. Another reminder that Toastmasters is a fantastic place not just to sharpen your speaking skills generally, but to practice a specific presentation you have to give.)

Former president Jonathan Buchanan has been thinking about centennials. (It’s the 100th birthday of the Association of Mineral Exploration of British Columbia, who generously lets us use their boardroom each week, pro bono). So he put together a fabulous Table Topics on that theme: Imagine yourself a hundred years into the past, Jonathan said. Were the clothes better back then? Was family life? Technology? The weather?

Two of three newcomers, Cal and Yan, stepped up to tackle Jonathan’s question.

That, folks, is the VanCore spirit.

Mary Lou Brings It Home. And a New VanCore Executive

The tenth and final speech in the Competent Communicator’s Manual is something special. You’re done! But of course now you have the experience to know… you’ve just begun.

Mary Lou, the busiest woman in the Lower Mainland, knocked off #10, inspired the crowd as required, and will now apply to receive her Competent Communicator Award from Toastmasters International just in time to clinch our Distinguished Club status.

Then came Connie. Like Bodemeister on the heels of I’ll Have Another, Connie is racing to complete her AC Bronze speeches in time to elevate VanCore to Select Distinguished, just one level below the highest award, President’s Distinguished Club. (Jonathan, who’s working on his AC Silver, will make it a lock.)

Slipstreaming behind the two veterans was relative newcomer Abrahan B, who became a club member just three weeks ago. In his second CC Manual speech, Abrahan got beautifully “to the point.”

And then the decks were cleared for the People’s Business. It was Election Day. What followed was the voting in of one of the strongest executives in club history.

Folks, meet Vancore’s new Board of Directors:

President–Connie Hubbs; VP of Education, Cory Forrest; VP of Membership, Borzo Salehi; VP of Membership, Loa Fridfinnson, VP of Public Relations; Treasurer, Victor He. Secretary, Debra Jang.

And a special shout must go to our new Sergeant-at-Arms, Susan Chew.

Susan is, of course, the club’s outgoing president. Its pumping heart. (No, she did not write this.) Thanks, Susan, for a great year. And thanks for staying close by. Can we call you in the middle of the night if, you know, we misplace our keys?

Congratulations and Best of Luck to even a greater Term in 2012/2013.

Summary and Ice Breaker Debuts

Cory chaired the final meeting in May and our VanCore Toastmasters club continues to grow with healthy attendance of enthusiastic speakers.  Roles were quickly assigned by Cory and upon recognition of all present the meeting speeches proceeded with Connie’s, ever enticing, inspiration about “Pride and an African Philanthropist in Zimbabwe”. (Does she ever not have an amazing story?)  Cory provided the “Word Of The Day which was “skerr”, an adverb that means to go rapidly. Double-latte to anyone who manages to use THAT in a sentence this week.

The three speaking spots were all filled.  Two new members bravely did their Ice Breakers:  Cai Qiu, a software developer with incredible knowledge in that field, and philosophical Abrahan Barriga who reads in four languages. (Wow!)  Out-going President of the Sunrise Rotary Club in Richmond, Mary Lou Miles, rehearsed her heartfelt appreciation speech in which she acknowledged and thanked the board of directors and the membership for their  wonderful encouragement, support and cooperation throughout her term as their president.

Excellent, meaningful and to-the-point evaluations for the three speeches were given by Debra, Angela and Connie.  I predict that in the next annual Evaluation Contest Carla will have competition from within our Vancore club.

Borzo’s highly successful, non-thematic Table Topics were thoroughly enjoyed by all as participants aimed to fill their two-minute impromptu.  Topics ranging from Pacific Rim Coffee vs Starbucks to Brazilian beer, and pets.

Connie evaluated the table topics session, Debra was in charge of timing and Susan hardly heard any ums and ahs.  We are getting better all the time.

Special announcement were made by Immediate-Past-President/Club Secretary, Jonathan Buchanan.  With the ending of the current term at the end of this month, the election of a new Board of Directors will take place at the next meeting, on June 6th.  All are invited to attend and participate in the proceedings.

Two New Members and an engaging Media Interview

Although it was another rainy Wednesday, we had a “bonanza” (word of the day) of four exciting international guests: Gustavo from Brazil, Abrahan from Peru, Shine from Shanghai and Aranka who has been in Canada for seven years.   Adding to the dynamics of the meeting Abrahan couldn’t resist signing up before saying “Adios” and Cal Qui who was a guest the week before, also became a member.

To our delight, along with Theo, Loa, Borzo and Cal, all four guests participated in Table Topics, covering such subjects as “job hunting, arts in the city, social housing and life and sights in Brazil and Peru”.  Our Table Topics Master Angela, did a fine job leading us through fascinating topics to practice our impromptu speaking.  As always, she inspired and motivated with understanding and much empathy.

Connie held court for the day capturing our attention with a speech made for a consumer and media broadcast audience.  She is working on her Advanced Manual for TV Communications.  The objective of her presentation was to handle a press conference with confidence and poise.  In lieu of the evaluation she was bombbarded with a barrage of questions by the “press” consisting of Aranka, Angela, Borzo and Susan.  Well prepared and knowledgeable, Connie was unflappable and held her own as a professional person of influence would.

Last minute Chair replacement was handled with finesse by Loa who quickly provided the Agenda, called the meeting to order, filled the vacant roles and called for the introduction of members and guests.  Cal did the Timer’s Report and Borzo doubled up as General Evaluator and Grammarian.

The last Meeting in May is coming up fast.  June will be quite busy with the Election of the new Board of Directors, getting all our DCP point in before June 30th, and preparing for another vibrant term, beginning on July 1st, 2012.

Looking forward to our next exciting session.

Practical Gifts and Inspirational Thoughts

Meeting summary for Vancore, May 16, 2012

Last Wed’s Vancore Toastmasters meeting was led by Chair and VP of Education, Connie Hubbs, and held at the Bread Garden at Hornby and West Pender Street which went amazingly well despite the somewhat noisy conditions.  Also, we had the odd customer drifting in and out of the restaurant trying not to pay attention to us but seemingly curious about what we were doing.  Maybe we will have another new guest this week!

Vancore members enjoyed the experience of meeting in a totally different atmosphere: no TM banner, no lectern and gavel, no name plates or green/yellow/red flags for participants in Table Topics to watch out for.  Some people spoke for almost two full minutes, and others even went further.    We are definitely gaining great experience and improving our impromptu speaking.

Mary Lou provided a lovely inspiration on practical gifts to give to people who are going through difficult times.  Flowers and cards are very nice, but what is really appreciated is prepared food for meals when one is too busy or tired to cook.  Good tip to remember when wanting to support a friend or family member in need.

Angela bravely took on the role as Joke Master and spoke about the billionaire who borrowed money from the bank in order to get free parking.  No wonder he was wealthy!

We were all much saddened and inspired by the two speeches given that day.

Mary Lou practiced her most touching and eloquent eulogy in tribute to her beloved brother Gordy, who passed away recently.  He lived with a developmental disability, loved to smile and laugh, and had an amazing way of teaching “able” bodied people the true meaning of living.

In life, challenging events happen to us all.  Toastmaster’s is a safe and supportive place to practice honoring the people we care about in a public venue.   We sincerely thank Mary Lou for sharing the light of her brother’s life with us and are so inspired by her courage and willingness to do so with such poise and grace.

Connie’s AT Bronze Speech was on the great accomplishments of heavy metalist, Jason Becker who suffers with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig Syndrome.  Conducted in a TV broadcast style, Connie provided a 7-minute review of the inspiring documentary on the life of Jason Becker called, “Not Dead Yet”.  She presented us with a fantastic overview of what was compelling about the movie and had us asking about it after the review.   A successful TV broadcast indeed.

Debra provided the evaluation for Mary Lou’s eulogy calling it a moving narrative and a beautiful speech on what her brother Gordy was like as a person.  Debra felt Mary Lou was calm and articulate on her delivery of such an emotionally challenging speech and painted an amazing picture of her brother.

Angela conducted Connie’s evaluation giving her high marks for a clearly expressed opinion of the documentary, excellent tone and pace of her review, great eye contact and a successful achievement of the talk’s objectives.

Table Topics was lead by Susan who provided Loa, Cory, Borzo, Cal, Angela, Mary Lou and Debra with opportunities to speak for 2 min each on an impromptu topic of she chose.  Everyone provided an enthusiastic account of their thoughts on a particular subject area.   Hats off to guest Cal who even stepped up and spoke for the first time!

Cory was the General Evaluator and gave us kudos for holding a successful meeting in an unusual location.  We also were provided with a challenge of holding more eye contact with our audience given the distractions around us.  Overall, a fantastic meeting!

Our Chair, Connie adjourned the Meeting at 4:30 PM, sharp.

May 9 meeting was brought to you by the Letter C for Courage

Sometimes the best speeches are just stories of our lives.

Cory Forrest, the hardest-working man in Vancouver and today donning a groovy blue blazer befitting a talk-show host, stole the show with an impromptu speech about a job he once had harvesting wild rice. It involved spiders. And phobias. And courage.

Courage, in fact, was a theme of the meeting. In an unorthodox inspiration, the group saw a clip of a pro golfer who is afflicted with a dreadful stutter, yet somehow managed to give a speech before hundreds of her peers. (This was another teachable TM moment: how often is a speech scuppered by technology? That’s why we memorize rather than relying on PowerPoint and whatnot. Bruce tried to show the clip on his laptop only to lose the signal. Newcomer Sonia saved the day by dialing in to her iPod.)

It takes courage, too, to speak on live TV. That’s what two Vancore veterans, Susan and Connie, were practicing for. Their collaborative, advanced-manual speech that simulated a TV interview. Susan, in the Barbara Walters role, grilled Connie on Charity Fundraising (Why’s it important? Why should we care?) The questions were sharp, the responses so smooth you’d think Connie was IN this line of work. Oh right: she is.

Finally, it takes courage to step up for Table Topics on your first ever visit to a TM meeting. Kudos to Andrew.

Vancore is pulsing with new blood these days. Come for the Werther’s candies at the reception desk, stay for the professional development. So say all of us.

Please note that next week, Vancore will meet elsewhere next week. Our usual venue, the AMEBC, will be closed to us. Probably it’ll be the BG Café right next door. But stay tuned for confirmation.
